Blandford Fly Premium Ale

Posted by: Tony In: Bottles

Badger Blandford Fly

I have posted so many bottled ale reviews this week. Lucky I don’t think of myself as an alcoholic!

Badger make Blandford Fly. This unique ale celebrates the infamous Blandford Fly, a resident biting insect of Dorset’s River Stour. Local folklore has it that ginger could help reduce the fever and swelling inflicted by the Fly’s bite. The inspired inclusion of ginger in this ale has made the antidote so agreeable that locals now claim that the insect swarms all year.. (oh dear – sounds a bit Loch Ness monster to me!).

They also say this is “an unusually refreshing premium ale, subtly spiced for extra bite – with a warming character!”

There is nothing subtle about the spice in this ale. It is Ginger, ginger, ginger. Too much ginger.

First time round I struggled to finish a bottle of this stuff – this time round I found it far easier. I am guessing the 30+ degrees of Lyon heat are the overwhelming reason – but I still have concerns about this one! The bottle is far colder than last time too – making it much more refreshing than my previous tasting.

Definitely an acquired taste and not really for me. I like all the other Badger’s in the Set – but I am not a fan of this one. My boss at work loves this one though – so it clearly has its fan-base.
